Back in the good old days of the eighties and most of the nineties, the MTV video music awards was a very important event, or at least it seemed that way at the time. Winning the best video award was a real accomplishment that really meant something at the time. There were also some of the coolest performances that would take place on the show. Those days are long gone, but these are the videos that have won the top award. Some are well deserved, others are head scratching. Most of the time, a good winner was chosen.

The eighties saw the advent of MTV and VH1. They became a major part of everyone's life. The music video became an art form of its own. It was a very unique era of music. It was colorful and over the top at times. It was the time when hair metal became popular. Rap was beginning to get bigger. There were larger than life stars such as Michael Jackson and Madonna. There was new wave as well. There were also numerous one hit wonders and huge singles. It was a fantastic time. These are the biggest MTV type artists of the decade. This is different than if there was a list of the greatest artists of that time. Also, this is only taking into account the eighties. Some of these artists would rank higher or lower in other decades.
